HOME: A Day Late and a Little Short
I have been back in Los Angeles for about 36 hours. As expected, arriving to an empty home was a little anticlimactic. My place was cold and still. A plant in my garden had been knocked over and left upside down. A large roll of duck tape was set on top of one of my sand dollars in the garden, crushing it into pieces. Forcing myself to find some humor in the situation, I imagined Ty Pennington at my doorstep with a blow horn saying, “Welcome home Stephanie, Welcome home.” How awkward it must be for him to say that without reference to family. Yesterday, I felt a little high and out of...

It is 5am in Albuquerque, NM. With 13 hours to go to Los Angeles, this should be my last stay in a $50 motel room for awhile. Nothing is more comforting than the word home right now. Yesterday was an entirely different adventure. My red sled (red rental car) and I parted ways. It did the best it could, yet when the service lights came on in the dash, I had about all I could take. I had tried to exchange the car from the beginning due to electrical and steering issues. After a call to Hertz, they routed me to Oklahoma City Airport to exchange the car. I was about 90 miles outside of the...

It is 5:30 am in Wichita, KS. I am having a hard time writing right now but I know I need to say something. Actually, I need to say a lot of something. When I woke up early Saturday morning to begin my journey back to Los Angeles there were many things on my mind. I was anxious to start out again but worried I am failing to bring awareness to the critical circumstances of isolation. The night before, I was involuntary engaged in game of communication hangman when a BOY (probably should say man but it seems inappropriate in this case) who I thought was a new friend, never bothered to...

Early to bed, early to rise. I will be going to bed soon, to get up around 2:00 am to hit the road. No matter what route I select to return to Los Angeles I am going to hit some weather conditions not favorable for driving. I can handle it but I doubt my red rental car is as confident. It seems determined to perform like a sled. Not sure this is the adventure I was hoping for…. Regardless, I am ready. The sled is packed. A freshly sewn button is on my driving sweater. (Thanks, Mom) The dogs are giving me their sweetest “don’t leave me” eyes to ensure their position...

It is Thursday morning. The days in Michigan will be behind me soon. It is snowing, coming down consistent and strong. On the stereo, KT Tunstall’s “Still a Weirdo.” And that my friends, pretty much sums it up for me. I have reconnected with friends and family. I have made new friends. I have shared time and conversation with complete strangers. And thanks to my brothers David and Scott, I have played a lot of Angry Bird. (Damn Droid game is ridiculously addicting) Even in difference circumstances, unable to plan the day, I am the same person. Somewhat at peace yet rebelliously...

Happy New Year to you! We hope it is off to great start. When we created SocialBling, we did it under the two premises: If dating and finding new business opportunities (new job and/or customer) are at opposite ends as to why people need to network, can we create a more mutually beneficial network by focusing less on the differences of those two ends and by finding mutual ground in the middle? (I.e. goals, hobbies, interests, information exchanges, etc) If we pre-screened and introduced people based on best attributes and information that is important to them yet sometimes hard to reveal...
